Junior Seau from Oceanside High School and Marion Bates from Tucson Amphitheater, two of the Trojans’ top recruits, have been declared academically ineligible for failing to meet Proposition 48 guidelines, Coach Larry Smith said. Additionally, quarterback Vince Phillips, the Coastal Conference co-player of the year from Muir High School in Pasadena, has signed with the New York Yankees and will foresake a football career at USC.
Smith also said Chris Hale, an honorable mention All-American defensive back from Glendale College, has joined the USC football team.
