College Basketball Roundup : At the End, Edwards Is the Hottest Hoosier in Victory Over Irish

Freshman Jay Edwards, a spectator on the bench for the game’s first 30 minutes, made the most of his opportunity when Indiana Coach Bob Knight sent him into action.

Edwards entered the game with 9:49 to play and excited the capacity crowd of 17,155 at Bloomington, Ind., by scoring seven consecutive Indiana points as the fifth-ranked Hoosiers defeated Notre Dame, 76-59, Tuesday night.

Edwards, who had 12 of his team’s final 16 points, began his spurt with 6:15 remaining after Notre Dame had cut a 14-point second-half deficit to 58-53. The 6-foot 4-inch guard had a pair of three-pointers in his spurt and was 5 of 6 from the field.

The Hoosiers are 2-0. It was the season opener for the Irish.

Keith Smart led Indiana with 18 points, while David Rivers scored 24 for the Irish.

Kansas 94, Pomona-Pitzer 38--At Lawrence, Kan., Kevin Pritchard and Marvin Branch each scored 17 points as the Jayhawks defeated the Division III Sagehens for their 49th straight victory at home, a Big Eight record.

The old conference mark of 48 consecutive home victories was set by Oklahoma from 1984-86.

Kansas, which lost two straight games last weekend during the Maui tournament in Hawaii, improved to 2-2. The Sagehens dropped to 1-4.

Pomona-Pitzer’s Rick Duque led all scorers with 18 points. Kansas’ Danny Manning had 12 points. The Jayhawks shot 75.9% from the field.

Santa Clara 72, Stanford 71--Center Dan Weiss made two free throws with two seconds left to give the Broncos an upset victory over the Cardinal at Stanford.

Santa Clara, of the West Coast Athletic Conference, improved its record to 1-1. Stanford fell to 2-2.

The deciding free throws came after Weiss was fouled by Stanford forward Todd Lichti underneath the Santa Clara basket.

Stanford had time for a desperation shot at the buzzer, but center Howard Wright missed a hook from the top of the key. Forward Greg Butler’s tip-in of the missed shot was deemed too late by the officials.

Lichti led all scorers with a career-high 31 points. Mitch Burley scored 16 points, including four three-pointers, to lead Santa Clara.

Arizona St. 79, N. Arizona 75--Senior guard Arthur Thomas scored 27 points and had 2 steals to trigger a second-half rally as Sun Devils (2-0) beat the Lumberjacks (0-3) at Flagstaff, Ariz.

Mark Anderson, a junior guard, led Northern Arizona with 24 points.

Arizona State led only 62-58 with 8:58 left, but Thomas made two free throws after a steal, turned another theft into a layup and hit a jumper for a 70-58 ASU lead with 7:22 to go.

Oregon 82, Central Michigan 67--Junior guard Frank Johnson led a balanced attack with 18 points as the Ducks (2-0) beat the Chippewas (2-2) at Eugene, Ore.

San Diego St. 76, Cal Poly Pomona 65--The Aztecs, who finished 5-25 last season, are 2-1 after beating the Broncos (2-2) at San Diego. Rodney Hawkins and Tony Ross each scored 13 points for San Diego, which had five players in double figures.

Center Tony Theisen had game highs of 20 points and 10 rebounds for the Division II Broncos.

DePaul 88, Niagara 87--The Blue Demons, upset 84-76 in their opener by Pepperdine, escaped opening the season with consecutive losses for the first time by winning in overtime at Rosemont, Ill.

Terence Greene scored a career-high 33 points, and Kevin Edwards scored 6 of his 26 points in the overtime period for DePaul. Mark Henry scored 24 of his 30 points in the second half for Niagara (0-1).

With DePaul leading, 88-80, with 25 seconds remaining, Greene was ejected for punching Niagara’s Patrick Jones and Kevin Golden was assessed a technical foul for leaving the DePaul bench. Henry made four free throws to trim the lead to 88-84 with 15 seconds left.

Eldridge Moore hit a three-pointer with 10 seconds remaining for the final margin. DePaul’s Brad Niemann missed the first of a one-and-one with eight seconds left, but Stanley Brundy blocked Henry’s 18-footer as time expired.

Kentucky 101, Cincinnati 77--Guard Rex Chapman scored 22 points and center Rob Lock added 18 as the No. 2-ranked Wildcats (2-0) made 35 of 41 free throws and beat the Bearcats at Lexington, Ky.

Oklahoma 93, Penn State 59--Ricky Grace scored 24 points and Mookie Blaylock had 23 to lead the Sooners (2-0) over the Nittany Lions (1-1) at State College, Pa.

Marquette 70, Hartford 61--The victory at Milwaukee was the 999th in Marquette’s history. Tony Reeder scored 17 points to lead the Warriors.

Ohio State 94, W. Michigan 79--Despite the victory at Columbus, Ohio, Buckeye Coach Gary Williams wasn’t pleased with his team’s performance in the second half, when the Buckeyes couldn’t put the Broncos away after building a 26-point lead.

“About the only thing we did was make everyone miss the first 15 minutes of ‘Moonlighting,’ ” Williams said.

Three players fouled out, and one official was sidelined after a collision late in the game.

Jay Burson lead the Buckeyes (2-0) with 25 points, and Jerry Francis and Curtis Wilson each had 19. Eli Parker had 26 for the Broncos in their season opener.

Wisconsin 87, No. Illinois 77--Trent Jackson scored 28 points and Danny Jones added 23 to lead the Badgers (2-0) at Madison, Wis.

Iowa 70, Drake 59--Junior forward Roy Marble, who required eight stitches to close a cut over his left eye during a victory over Villanova Sunday night in the title game of the Maui tournament in Hawaii, scored 19 points, including 17 in the first half, to lead the Hawkeyes (4-0) over the Bulldogs (1-1) at Iowa City.

Boston College 121, Harvard 80--At Cambridge, Mass., the Eagles, who got 26 points from Dana Barros, set a record for most points ever scored against the Crimson.

Brigham Young 96, Utah State 92--Center Jim Usevitch scored 26 points and the Cougars fought back a late Aggie rally to win at Logan, Utah.
