San Diego Sports Et cetera : Point Loma Nazarene Misses Its Opportunity

Senior center Jim Pursell sank two free throws with 34 seconds to play to give the Whittier College men’s basketball team a 72-70 nonconference victory at Point Loma Nazarene Tuesday.

Point Loma Nazarene had a chance to tie the game, but forward Clayton Williams missed a jumper with 10 seconds to play.

Point Loma Nazarene (2-3) took an early 12-0 edge and led, 43-36, at halftime. But Whittier (3-2) narrowed the margin in the second half and took the lead for the first time near the end of the game.

Pursell had a game-high 19 points. Williams led Point Loma with 18 points and 17 rebounds.

Center Steve Riddle also had 18 points for Point Loma.

Jay Triano scored 28 points to lead the British Columbia Olympic All-Stars to a 114-112 exhibition victory over Athletes in Action in Vancouver, Canada.

Mike Krisman scored 27 and Jay Kelsey 16 for British Columbia, a team made up of several players from the Canadian Olympic team.

Zack Jones led AIA (14-7) with 27 points. Reid Gettys, Gib Hines and Lorenzo Romar each added 18 points for AIA.

TENNIS

Top-seeded Scott Patridge of the University of San Diego defeated Matt Butler, 6-0, 6-0, Tuesday to move into the third round of the San Diego All-College men’s tennis tournament at USD.

All of the seeded players advanced to the third round except for No. 2 Julio Noriega of San Diego State. Noriega did not show up for his match, so Brian Morris of Grossmont advanced. Tournament officials did not know why Noriega had failed to appear.

The third round of singles begins at 1 today at USD’s West courts. The first round of doubles begins after the singles are completed.
