U.S. Envoy Mansfield in Hospital
WASHINGTON — U.S. Ambassador to Japan Mike Mansfield is in Hawaii for a routine operation and will return to Tokyo in about two weeks, the State Department said today.
Mansfield, 84, who has spent 10 years as ambassador to Japan, left Tokyo on Saturday and is undergoing treatment at Tripler Army Medical Center, said deputy spokeswoman Phyllis Oakley. She gave no further details. A State Department official who asked not to be identified said Mansfield apparently wanted no information released about his medical problem other than to say it involves a routine operation.
