Women’s Basketball : No. 5 Iowa Upsets Top-Ranked Texas, 75-65
Jolette Law and Michelle Edwards each scored 17 points as fifth-ranked Iowa upset No.1-ranked Texas, 75-65, Wednesday night, breaking the Longhorns’ streak of 43 straight road victories, to win the Orange Bowl tournament at Miami.
Iowa (9-0) led from start to finish, holding a slim 33-31 lead at halftime and building a 16-point lead at 56-40 with 12:35 left. All five Hawkeye starters finished in double figures, including tournament MVP Franthea Price with 16 points. Texas (9-1) was led by Beverly Williams with 18 points and C. J. Jones with 7 points and 14 rebounds.
USC 85, Old Dominion 70--The Trojans scored the first eight points of the second half to increase their lead to 47-34 and went on to beat the Monarchs in the championship game of the Old Dominion tournament at Norfolk, Va.
USC (5-3), which led by as many as 22 points, was paced by junior center Cherie Nelson, who scored 33 points and had 9 rebounds. She was named the tournament MVP. Karon Howell, the Trojans’ junior guard, scored 20 points and was 4 for 4 on three-point shots.
UCLA, riding a two-game winning streak, will play host to North Carolina today at 2 p.m. in the Wooden Center.
The Bruins (5-5) beat UC Irvine, 84-54, Tuesday night in stunning fashion, scoring 24 straight points early and holding the Anteaters scoreless for nine minutes late in the game.
North Carolina is 6-2 and had won five in a row before losing to California Monday night.
