PREP BASKETBALL : Girls’ Roundup : Schoeny Leads Capistrano Valley
Forward Heather Schoeny scored 26 points to lead Capistrano Valley High School to a 49-42 victory over Chino in the championship game of the Costa Mesa tournament Wednesday.
Schoeny was named the tournament most valuable player, scoring 80 points in four games for the Cougars (11-3).
Serena Murillo led Chino with 20 points.
In other tournament games:
Palos Verdes 52, Tustin 47--Guard Theresa Perkins scored all 17 of her points in the final quarter to lead a Tiller comeback that fell short. Tustin trailed, 40-24, going into the fourth quarter of the third-place game. Heather Burge led Palos Verdes with 19 points.
Cypress 51, Cerritos 45--Diane Pohl scored 17 points to lead Cypress in the fifth-place game. Shannon Haraga led Cerritos with 19 points.
Westminster 63, Estancia 57--Shannon Bates had 21 points for the Lions (4-8) in the consolation championship. Shana Neburn and Shannon Suzuki each scored 15 points for the Eagles.
In the Escondido tournament:
Whittier 47, University 42--Sherri Franson scored 15 points to lead the Cardinals to victory in the semifinals at Escondido. Shelley Davis had 15 rebounds for the Trojans (4-4).
