PREP BASKETBALL : Boys’ Roundup : University Fifth in Tournament; Stolzoff Sets Record

University High School finished fifth in the Fiesta boys’ basketball tournament Wednesday in Chandler, Ariz., defeating Tempe, 65-60.

Steve Stolzoff, the Trojans’ 6-foot 4-inch guard, led the team with 24 points, 4 assists and 10 rebounds. Stolzoff also set a tournament record for free throws, making all 16 of his shots during the tournament.

The game was tied, 48-48, after three quarters, but University made 9 of 10 free throws in the final period. Ben Saltzman and Stefan Mumaw each had four rebounds in the game’s final three minutes.

Tempe’s high scorer was Dave Campbell with 17 points.

In the Walter Wong Tournament:

St. Joseph Alameda 70, El Toro 60--LaCoby Phillips scored 21 points to lead St. Joseph (10-2) in the championship game in Honolulu. The Chargers (9-3) led, 37-32, at halftime, but were outscored, 16-5, in the third quarter. Eric Speaker had 15 points for El Toro.

In the Canyon tournament:

SF McAteer 67, Lynwood 54--Forward Raymond Bowles, named the tournament’s most valuable player, scored 21 points to lead McAteer (10-2) to the championship. Louis Williams scored 19 points for Lynwood.

Carson 74, Esperanza 63--Damon Estell scored 18 points for Carson, and forward Rob Nay scored 19 points for Esperanza.

Newport Harbor 48, Los Amigos 35--Mike Nguyen scored 15 points and Tyler Koon 14 as the Sailors won the consolation championship. Newport Harbor’s defense held the Lobos to just 12 points in the first half. Carlos Palomino scored 16 points for Los Amigos.

Canyon 57, Villa Park 48--The Comanches jumped to an 18-2 first-quarter lead and survived a second-quarter rally to win the seventh-place game. Ralph Pacheco had 14 points and Chris Rodwick 12 for the Comanches. Roger Branstine scored 12 points and Colin Hartwig 10 for the Spartans.

Bolsa Grande 81, Trabuco Hills 65--Joe Small scored 31 points to lead the Matadors in the fifth-place game. John Barnes had 19 points for the Mustangs.

In the Brea-Olinda Tournament:

Sunny Hills 73, Brea-Olinda 64--Brian McCloskey scored 29 points to lead the Lancers (9-1) to the championship. Matt Chamberlin had 18 points for the Wildcats (6-5)

Buena Park 83, La Habra 66--Gary Hunter had 23 points and Kevin Grady 14, as the Coyotes (7-3) won the third-place game. Bob Small had 12 points for the Highlanders.

El Dorado 71, Don Lugo 53--Chris Facione scored 29 points to the Hawks to the consolation championship. El Dorado trailed, 29-28, at halftime but outscored Don Lugo, 23-12, in the third quarter. Facione, a senior forward, made 10 of 14 field goals and 6 of 6 free throws.

In the Pacifica tournament:

Savanna 58, Pacifica 52--Mark Paule scored 14 points to lead the Rebels (10-2) to the tournament title. Dustin Bonham scored 16 points for the Mariners (2-5).

Troy 74, Santiago 45--Jim Bridges had 11 points and Matt Crothers 10 to lead the Warriors in the third-place game.
