Conrad (Conny) von Biskirchen, badge number 1397 with the Santa Ana Police Department, was scheduled to retire in a few months. In his five years on the force, Conny, as he was affectionately called, had taken part in more than 100 arrests.

Conny had press clippings. He drew national attention about a year ago when he helped capture a robbery suspect who hit him in the head with a pipe. Bleeding, with a broken nose and concussion, he got his suspect and was back on the job within the week.

Conny wasn’t a regular officer. He was part of the Santa Ana Department’s canine corps, a German shepherd, born and trained in West Germany. Connie had his playful side. He loved peppermint candy and liver-flavored dog treats. He also loved to track suspects.

Several weeks ago he tracked a car thief. That was his last arrest. Last Sunday he suffered a painful and irreparable disk injury that prevented him from moving his hind legs. Last Wednesday he was mercifully and painlessly put to sleep. Police officers, as tough as Conny, cried. He was respected as a fellow officer and loved as a pet.

Yes, we know, Conrad von Biskirchen was a dog. But outstanding public service, from man or beast, deserves recognition.
