NASA Administrator James C. Fletcher; Rear Adm. Richard H. Truly, chief of the shuttle program, and other top National Aeronautics and Space Administration officials plan a news conference today at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida to outline space shuttle launching plans as well as the steps being taken to recover from the failure of a booster nozzle “boot ring” during a test firing last month. Agency officials have said that the first post-Challenger mission, which had been scheduled to blast off in early June, appears to be 6 to 10 weeks behind schedule.
