Taiwan’s ruling Nationalist Party approved major reforms that eventually will allow Taiwanese to elect all members of Parliament, now dominated by elderly lawmakers who escaped mainland China when the Nationalists lost the civil war to the Communists in 1949. Interior Minister Wu Po-hsiung said the government will encourage the voluntary retirement of elderly members and increase the size of the 312-seat Legislative Yuan, the highest lawmaking body, and the 934-seat National Assembly, the electoral college. Currently, only 73 seats of the Legislative Yuan and 106 seats of the National Assembly are held by members elected on Taiwan.
