Two people died in avalanches in the Soviet republic of Georgia, while storms brought down main power lines linking the Soviet Union with Romania, according to press and television reports. The main Soviet television news said that heavy snow caused a series of avalanches in the Caucasus Mountains in Georgia, but it gave no details of how the deaths had occurred. The government newspaper Izvestia reported that winds gusting up to 80 m.p.h. brought down power lines in the southern Ukraine, damaging pylons and cutting off the supply of Soviet electricity to Romania.
