Del Rey League Seeks to Alter Schedule Format

A proposal by Del Rey League athletic directors to play two rounds of league games in basketball, soccer and water polo and three rounds in baseball and tennis will be presented to the principals of member schools for approval Tuesday.

The athletic directors voted, 4-1, in favor of the proposal at a meeting at Alemany High on Monday. Notre Dame and Bosco Tech will be leaving the league after this season, prompting the reshuffling. Currently, schools in the seven-member league play two rounds in each sport.

Under the recommendation, the baseball league season would still consist of 12 games. The basketball season would start Jan. 10, a week later than it did this season. In league play, each school would play eight games and have two byes, instead of the 12-game schedule this season.

Athletic directors defeated a proposal by Loyola to implement a basketball tournament after two rounds of league play. A recommendation for three rounds of league games in basketball also was rejected.

“We basically decided that there is too much of a home-court advantage in some sports to schedule two games at one school in the same year,” Muff said.

With Notre Dame leaving to join the newly formed San Fernando Valley League and Bosco Tech joining the Camino Real League, the Del Rey again will comprise five teams, as it did as recently as 1982. Next season, the league will consist of St. John Bosco, Loyola, St. Francis, Crespi and Alemany.
