SOUTHERN SECTION BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIP GAMES : Girls’ 2-A : Chino Turns Back Woodbridge, 47-41
Chino High School used a superior height advantage and a big early lead to beat Woodbridge of Irvine, 47-41, and win the Southern Section girls’ 2-A championship Friday night at Cerritos College.
It was the Cowboys’ second 2-A title in the past three seasons.
Chino (23-6) advanced to the state tournament next week. Woodbridge finished its season 25-6.
Felicia Franke, Chino’s 6-foot junior forward, scored a game-high 18 points and was too big for Woodbridge to handle inside.
And on a night when leading scorer Serena Murillo, a senior forward who averaged 18.7 points a game coming into the game, had just 5, Chino needed everything Franke could give.
Kathy Millat, a senior forward, had 13 points to lead Woodbridge, which does not have a player taller than 5-9.
Chino went on a 14-0 run to begin the second quarter and led, 30-19, at halftime.
The Cowboys pushed their advantage to 41-25 at the end of the third quarter as Woodbridge went cold. Then Chino caught the chill.
Woodbridge closed to within, 42-37, on Millat’s jumper with 2:36 left. But the Warriors couldn’t get any closer and Chino made 3 of 5 free throws down the stretch to preserve the win.
