1-Day Colombia Strike Only Mildly Effective

BOGOTA, Colombia — A one-day general strike called by Colombia’s main labor group to protest political violence caused only minor disruptions Wednesday.
The strike was called by the leftist Unified Workers Confederation after 21 banana-plantation workers were massacred in the northern region of Uraba last week, apparently by a right-wing paramilitary group.
In Bogota, between 20% and 30% of the urban bus drivers stayed home early Wednesday, but public transport returned to normal later in the day.
Colombia’s three other trade union groups had decided not to join the strike.
