El Segundo Tournament
Simi Valley 7, El Segundo 6--Scott Sharts hit 2 home runs--his second and third of the season--and the Pioneers scored 4 runs in the bottom of the seventh to defeat El Segundo, 7-6, in a consolation-round game at Simi Valley.
Sharts, who is 5 short of the Southern Section career home run record of 25, hit a solo shot in the fifth to bring Simi Valley (3-1) to within 6-3. His two-run homer in the seventh made the score 6-5.
with one out in he seventh, Mike Laker walked, Jeff Sommer singled and Mike Jenkins singled to score Laker with the tying run. A passed ball moved the runners to second and third and Andy Hodgins’ squeeze produced the winning run.
Westlake 8, Rolling Hills 1--Mike Eby allowed 4 hits, walked 1 and struck out 2 in 6 innings in the consolation quarterfinals.
Eby, a left-hander, was promoted from the junior varsity two weeks ago. Westlake’s pitching staff has given up only 1 earned run in 21 innings. Rolling Hills’ only run was unearned.
Saugus 4, Palos Verdes 1--Jeff Bodeau allowed 1 hit, struck out 12 and walked 1 in the consolation round.
Bodeau (1-1) had a no-hitter for 5 innings before surrendering a single with two outs in the sixth.
Jared Snyder, Darrell Davis and Roger Salkeld each had 2 hits for Saugus (1-2). Snyder had 3 RBIs.
Crespi 5, Mayfield 2--Crespi (1-2) scored 3 runs in the eighth inning in winning a third-round consolation game at Mayfield. Chad Nichols (1-1), who struck out 6 in a complete-game effort, scored the tying run in the seventh inning and knocked in the Celts’ first run in the eighth.
