Local News in Brief : Accord to Hire Bus Firms
- Share via
Los Angeles County and seven San Gabriel Valley cities have approved an agreement that would allow private bus companies to take over one-third of the service now provided by the Southern California Rapid Transit District in the area.
Thus far, the operating agreement has been approved by Bradbury, Azusa, La Verne, Covina, Glendora, Duarte and San Dimas. Twelve other San Gabriel Valley cities, and La Habra Heights, must also approve the plan before it can be implemented.
Supervisor Pete Schabarum has estimated that the proposed transit zone, which would operate a total of 25 bus lines, could save member cities as much as $8.9 million a year. Schabarum said the service can begin in June if all the cities approve the plan in the next two weeks.
