Use of Union Labor in Building a Home
Regarding the article “Nightmare at the Elms” (March 6): Perhaps the William Lyon Co. should consider hiring only union subcontractors and workers to build their houses for them from now on.
The statement made by the inspector that “most of the problems can be blamed on the subcontractors because they build as fast and as cheap as they can with minimum quality,” just about says it all. When a contractor doesn’t have to pay an employee a guaranteed wage or insurance benefits, he can save that much more money. One can also guess where the contractor finds the workers he needs.
Contrary to popular belief, union workers are not angry, greedy or wealthy people. Most are hard-working persons trying to support a family. They are skilled craftsmen and women who know how to build a house correctly.
