The government sued the nation’s second-largest meatpacker on a claim that it cheated thousands of workers out of millions of dollars in overtime pay at 10 packinghouses in Kansas, Iowa, Nebraska, Minnesota and Idaho. In a suit filed in Kansas City, Kan., the Labor Department accused IBP Corp. of violating laws requiring employers to pay hourly workers 1 1/2 times the normal wage for work beyond 40 hours a week. The suit seeks what the government claims is unpaid overtime plus interest stretching to April, 1985, for 20,000 to 70,000 current and former employees.
