INTERIORS : Classic Comfort : A San Marino Guest Room You’ll Never Forget

TODAY marks the opening of the 24th Annual Pasadena Showcase House of Design, sponsored by the Pasadena Junior Philharmonic Committee to benefit the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra. Selected this year is a 12,500-square-foot, 11-bedroom Monterey Colonial home located on 2.2 acres in San Marino. Built in 1928 at a cost of $70,000, it was designed by noted architect Reginald Johnson (whose works include the Santa Barbara Biltmore Hotel) and featured in a 1931 issue of Architectural Digest.

Scott L. Brown, IFDA, June D. Brown, FIFDA, and Lynn H. Deal, IFDA, of J. S. Brown Design, Corona del Mar, designed the guest suite. Working with upholstered canvas wall panels and natural sisal carpeting, the designers created a retreat a guest would long remember. Subtleties of light and color in a sensual surrounding evoke a feeling of neoclassicism in a somewhat contemporary vein. Beyond the bed is a nook that has been converted into a state-of-the-art audio-video center with comfortable L-shape upholstered seating and handmade parchment walls.
