SportsScope : Cal State Women Land Four Promising Cagers

The Cal State Los Angeles women’s basketball team, which finished third in the California Collegiate Athletic Assn. and second in the conference’s post-season tournament last season, has completed a strong recruiting campaign with the signing of four players to letters of intent for next season.

Topping the list is 6-1 forward Lori Thompson from Monrovia High, an All-CIF Southern Section 2-A and All-San Gabriel Valley selection. A strong inside player, Thompson averaged 27.4 points and 22 rebounds to lead the valley in both departments.

The other recruits are 5-9 forward Carol Schoenmann from Alemany High in Mission Hills, 5-10 forward Sabryna Welch from Fullerton High and 5-10 forward Rochell Seabrook from Fullerton College.

Seabrook, who will be a junior next season, was a first-team all-state selection as a freshman and an All-South Coast Conference choice last year. “She plays quite a bit bigger than 5-10,” said Fullerton Coach Colleen Riley. “She has exceptional quickness and is a very good offensive rebounder.”

Schoenmann is the second player from Alemany to sign with the Golden Eagles. Guard Millie Junio had signed earlier along with forward Lyndee Fader from Belgium.

Williams Nuanes, an assistant coach at Bosco Tech High in Rosemead for the past 11 years, has been selected as the school’s basketball coach.

Nuanes replaces longtime Coach Jorge Calienes, who resigned to coach East Los Angeles College in Monterey Park. Calienes posted a 185-103 record in 11 seasons and his teams won three league titles and made the CIF playoffs nine times.

Nuanes was also assistant athletic director at Bosco Tech under Calienes and track and cross-country coach.

“I am very grateful to have worked with Coach Calienes,” Nuanes said. “He has given me the opportunity to grow as a coach.”

Bosco Tech, which reached the CIF 5-A playoffs last season, is expected to build its team around center Mike Kurnik (6-8) and guard Javier Ramirez.

Cal State Los Angeles infielder Mica Lewis, who led the Golden Eagles in hitting this season, has been named to the NCAA Division II All-Far West baseball team.

The junior was the team leader with a .351 batting average, 68 hits, 48 runs, 24 stolen bases and four triples. He was named to the All-California Collegiate Athletic Assn. team as a utility player.
