The Republican leader in the California state Senate, Kenneth L. Maddy of Fresno, has written Vice President George Bush urging him to consider Baseball Commissioner Peter V. Ueberroth, former president of the Los Angeles Olympics, for selection as his vice presidential running mate.
In his letter last Thursday, Maddy noted that Ueberroth, who is a personal friend, is a Californian and described California as “the key battleground state this fall” in the contest for President.
Ueberroth, Maddy said, “is a success story that knows no bounds. . . . He understands California; he understands how to get a tough job done; and he talks a language that working class and ethnic and racial minority groups can understand.”
