Teo Fabi of Italy, back on the CART circuit after a three-year absence, made a breakthrough for the Porsche team by gaining the provisional pole for the Meadowlands Grand Prix in East Rutherford, N.J.
Fabi averaged 111.859 m.p.h. in his March-Porsche, covering the 1.25-mile circuit at the Meadowlands in 38.62 seconds during the first qualifying session. Rick Mears, the Indianapolis 500 winner, clocked the second-best speed at 111.395 m.p.h in a Penske-Chevrolet.
A second qualifying session is scheduled today, with the 180-mile race Sunday.
