Local News in Brief : Slumlord Fined $24,491

A Los Angeles slumlord was ordered Thursday to pay $24,491 in fines, penalties and restitution for maintaining slum conditions at an apartment house he has since sold to the Unified School District for $1.1 million.

Henry T. Wong, 50, of Orange was sentenced after pleading no contest to 10 violations of various fire, building and safety and health codes at the three-story brick apartment building at 605 E. Washington Blvd.

City Atty. James K. Hahn said the building had rat and cockroach infestation, defective fire doors, standpipes and bathrooms, and storage of hazardous and combustible materials on the roof. Wong was sentenced by Municipal Court Commissioner Joseph Spada.
