Weekend Forecast Calls for Clouds, Humid Days, Possible Thunderstorms

Times Staff Writer

As July draws to a close, San Diego County residents can expect continued warm weather but with increasing cloudiness and humidity.

“This weekend is somewhat of a replay of last weekend,” National Weather Service forecaster Wilbur Shigehara said. “Although there will be more clouds, it will be warm and humid.”

The onset of clouds is caused by a change in high-level wind circulation, Shigehara said.

A high-pressure area over northeastern Arizona is moving toward San Diego. Air circulation around the high pressure will draw moisture from Mexico into the county, causing a cloudy, muggy weekend, he said. Humidity should range from 65% to 70%, with high temperatures at Lindbergh Field of 77 to 79 degrees through Sunday.

Afternoon and evening thundershowers are expected in the mountains and deserts of East County today, but by Saturday the threat of thunderstorms will move closer to San Diego, he said.

Shigehara expressed doubt that it will rain in San Diego but said it could rain in the foothills. “This is partially due to an activity of storms near the Equator. The storms concentrate a lot of moisture and clouds, which are moving their way up Mexico through Arizona and into southwest California.”

Clouds are expected along the beaches through mid-morning today, with clearing by afternoon. Skies are to be partly cloudy Saturday and Sunday. Beach highs throughout the weekend will range from 71 to 77 degrees. Surf will be 3 to 4 feet, and the ocean temperature will be 68.

Coastal highs will reach 75 to 81 degrees, with overnight lows of 65 to 70. Highs for the inland valleys will reach 81 to 91, with lows of 62 to 68.

The forecast calls for mountains and deserts to be partly cloudy and humid through Saturday with a chance of afternoon and evening thunderstorms. Mountain highs will range from 82 to 88, with lows of 58 to 65. Desert highs will reach 102 to 110, with overnight lows of 80 to 87.
