SEOUL, South Korea — The government, stepping up its security efforts in advance of the summer Olympics, deported a woman identified as a member of Black September, a Palestinian terrorist group that killed 11 Israelis at the 1972 Olympics, an immigration official said today.
The official, who is assigned to the Kimpo Airport Immigration Office, said the woman was deported Wednesday after overnight detention.
The state-run Korea Broadcasting System and the Dong-A Ilbo newspaper identified the woman as Dominique Marie Paul, 40, of France. The reports said she arrived Tuesday aboard a United Airlines flight to Seoul from San Francisco via Tokyo.
She was going through a passport check when immigration officials spotted her name on a list of terrorists provided by Interpol and other international anti-terrorism organizations, the reports said.
The Japanese Red Army, a small and violent terrorist group, has targeted the Summer Games in its underground literature, and South Korean officials are also braced for possible attacks by North Korea, which failed in its demand to co-host the Olympics.
Members of Black September attacked the Israeli quarters in the Munich Olympic athletes village on Sept. 5, 1972, killing 11 Israeli athletes. The Israeli delegation withdrew from the Munich Games after the attack and returned home.
