The Energy Department announced that it has awarded a $6.7-billion contract to the Westinghouse Electric Corp. to operate the Savannah River Plant, a nuclear weapons facility in South Carolina, for 5 1/2 years beginning next spring. Westinghouse, which beat out Martin Marietta Corp. for the contract, will replace the Du Pont Co. as operator of the plant. Du Pont, which built the plant and operated it for more than 30 years, announced last fall that it would not renew its contract when it expires next April.
