Orange Coast College will mark its 40th birthday Tuesday with a gala party and an 850-pound birthday cake.
The celebration is to mark the anniversary of the date classes began at the community college on Sept. 13, 1948.
The party will begin at 11:30 a.m. in the outdoor campus quad, off Fairview Road near Adams Avenue. Students, alumni and community residents are invited, college officials said.
All Orange Coast students with validated enrollment cards will be served a free barbecue, and the planners say they will have enough birthday cake for 5,000 people.
A sky diver will jump into the center of the quad at 12:15 p.m. L. David Whitmire, Orange Coast’s student body president, and Dean of Students Sharon K. Donoff will deliver brief remarks at 12:20 p.m.
With about 24,500 students, Orange Coast is the largest single-campus community college in the state.
