Roundup : Rancho Buena Vista Shows It Has Arrived, Routs Fallbrook

Second year Coach Craig Bell said the Rancho Buena Vista football team’s “pride and joy is lining up and running the ball and defense.”

Rancho Buena Vista, in only its second year of varsity of football, did a lot of both against Fallbrook at Vista High Saturday night, winning, 33-9, in a game where running back Scott Garcia and O.J. Hall amassed 312 yards to lead the Longhorn rushing attack.

Bell said they had to run to win, and RBV rushed 44 times for 396 yards.

At the half, the Longhorns had held Fallbrook to 85 total yards and a field goal.

Garcia scored three times for RBV, including a 4-yard run with 3 minutes left in the fourth quarter with the Longhorns leading, 26-9. That score was set up by a Fallbrook fumble on the Longhorn 37. Another Fallbrook turnover in the third quarter led to RBV’s third touchdown. It took the Longhorns three plays before Hall ran in from 28 yards out to make it 19-3.

University of San Diego High School 27, Torrey Pines 20--USDHS outscored No. 4 Torrey Pines, 21-0, in the second half for the upset at Torrey Pines.

John Lynch, regarded as one of the top quarterbacks in the county, was taken to the hospital after suffering an ankle injury in the second quarter. Lynch had two touchdown passes in the first half as Torrey Pines led, 20-6.

USDHS quarterback Anthony Masa hit Tony Moeder with a 45-yard touchdown pass, Andy Penaflor ran 3 yards for a score, and Steve Walker scored from two yards for his second touchdown of the game in the second half.

Carlsbad 18, Saddleback 14--Carlsbad quarterback Thaddeus MacNeal threw for three second-half touchdowns to rally his team at Saddleback.

Carlsbad, trailing 14-0, in the third quarter, converted on two Saddleback turnovers to cut the lead to 14-12. MacNeal threw a touchdown pass of 26 yards to Ron Williams with 6:11 remaining in the quarter. Then, with 4:34 left in the quarter, MacNeal threw to Miguel Perez for a 14-yard touchdown.

Carlsbad missed on both extra point attempts.

On the first play of the fourth quarter, MacNeal connected on a 85-yard scoring pass to Frank Brock, who was streaking down the sidelines. The two-point conversion attempt failed.

Crawford 20, Southwest 6--Crawford High scored 17 fourth-quarter points to down Southwest at Patrick Henry High. Eric Turner had 74 yards on 14 carries for the Colts. The Crawford defense held Southwest to minus 9 yards rushing.

Serra 25, Salesian 6--Junior quarterback Tom Cotner, who started at linebacker last season, threw for 318 yards to lead Serra in the Conquistadors’ first game outside San Diego County in their 11-year history.

Bishop’s 35, Flintridge 22--Bishop’s put the game away early in the fourth with two touchdowns. Marcelo Marquiz rushed 11 times for 42 yards and 3 touchdowns.

University City 34, Santana 14--Darnes Taylor scored two touchdowns and ran for 142 yards on 15 carries to lead University City over Santana at El Capitan.
