Art Center College Plans to Build Wing
Construction will begin in January on a $6.5-million, 47,472-square-foot wing at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, completing the building as it was originally conceived in the early 1970s by architect Craig Ellwood.
A spokeswoman for the college said the wing could be completed as early as January, 1990, in time to inaugurate a yearlong celebration of the college’s 60th anniversary. The wing’s plans are by James Tyler of James Tyler Architects, Santa Monica, who served as project architect for the original building when he was vice president of design for Craig Ellwood Associates.
The wing will enable the college to consolidate its instructional activities on the main campus at 1700 Lida Road. The institution is currently leasing supplementary space at 54 W. Colorado Blvd. in Pasadena’s Old Town area.
