Bavaria state Premier Franz Josef Strauss, a major figure in post-World War II German politics, suffered a heart attack while on a hunting trip near Munich, a state spokesman said. Strauss, 73, was taken by helicopter to a hospital in nearby Regensburg shortly after he collapsed, the spokesman added. There was no word on his condition. Strauss, premier of Bavaria since 1978, has headed the Christian Social Union, one of the parties in West Germany’s federal governing coalition, since 1961. He is well known in West Germany for his outspoken and controversial right-wing views.
