Paper Workers Call Off Strike

JAY, Me. — Striking paper workers, facing reductions in strike pay and support from other union locals, announced an end today to their 16-month strike against International Paper Co.
The strike began in June, 1987, when nearly 1,000 union members at Jay balked at accepting a concessionary contract that would have done away with premium pay for working on Sundays and holidays. About 1,300 other union members struck plants in Lock Haven, Pa., and DePere, Wis. In Mobile, Ala., 1,200 workers were locked out of their jobs by the company.
