China has withdrawn permission for Fang Lizhi to visit the United States, accusing him of spreading falsehoods about Chinese leaders, the outspoken dissident said. He denied the accusations and said he is reapplying for permission. In May, the Chinese Academy of Sciences had given Fang, an astrophysicist, permission to attend a symposium in Texas starting Dec. 12 and to spend six months at the Colorado Joint Institute for Laboratory Astrophysics. However, in a letter, the academy reversed its decision, citing comments that Fang made during a recent trip to Australia and Hong Kong, he said.
