Syrian-backed Palestinian guerrillas took up positions facing Christian areas in eastern Lebanon amid reports that a large-scale military confrontation in the war-torn country is imminent, police officials said. About 500 soldiers from the Palestinian Liberation Army--backed by tanks, mortars and jeep-mounted cannons--set up artillery batteries in the village of Yammunah, about 35 miles northeast of Beirut, the officials added. The reported deployment of the Palestinian force came 24 hours after Maj. Gen. Michel Aoun, the head of the Christian government in Lebanon as well as the army commander, accused Syria of preparing for a military operation against the Christian areas.
