Toros Can Tie for CCAA Soccer Title by Defeating Bakersfield

Cal State Dominguez Hills can clinch a tie for the California Collegiate Athletic Assn. men’s soccer title with a victory Saturday against Cal State Bakersfield in the final regular season game. The 1 p.m. game will be played at Dominguez Hills. The Toros (6-1-2 in CCAA) defeated Chapman, 2-0, on Wednesday to remain tied with Cal State Northridge (7-2). Toro Willie Ayala leads the CCAA in scoring with 13 goals and 3 assists for 29 points. In the latest ratings, the Toros are ranked 20th nationally in Division II and fifth in the West. If the Toros and Northridge tie for the title, a playoff game will be held Sunday morning at Pomona to determine the NCAA Tournament qualifier.

The Lady Toros soccer team closed out the season with a 3-1 victory Wednesday over Chapman to finish at 8-7-4. The Lady Toros entered the week ranked 10th in the nation. Lynor Johnson finished with 12 goals and 27 points. In a rarity Wednesday, Lynor Johnson--filling in as goalie--booted a penalty kick. It was her eighth goal of the season but first as a goalie. In other women’s action, the Dominguez Hills volleyball team (6-23) has the week off from CCAA competition but will play its annual alumni game Tuesday night at 7:30.

Loyola Marymount University this week reached agreement with Z Channel cable television to show a package of five Lions home basketball games this season. Z Channel is scheduled to show games Dec. 7 against Oregon State, Jan. 4 against Xavier of Ohio, Jan. 11 against San Francisco, Jan. 12 against Santa Clara and Feb. 17 against Portland. KCBS sportscaster Tony Hernandez and former UCLA All-American Ann Meyers will be the broadcast team.

The Loyola Marymount women’s volleyball team plays host to a hot Gonzaga squad at 7:30 tonight in a West Coast Athletic Conference contest. The Lions play a non-conference match Saturday evening at UC Santa Barbara. Loyola entered the week 7-15 overall and 3-6 in the WCAC. Gonzaga had won five of its last six matches to improve to 13-10 and pull into fourth place in the WCAC at 4-4.

Diver Marc Conte of Redondo Beach won three medals at the recent world masters age-group diving championships in Australia. Conte, 38, won a gold medal in mixed tower diving, a silver in the 1-meter board and a bronze in the 3-meter. Conte, a member of the city Recreation Commission, said his goal is to convince Redondo Beach to fund a swimming and diving facility on the Aviation High School site.
