Local News in Brief : Shipyard Committee Approved
The Long Beach City Council has endorsed the formation of a committee to woo business to the Long Beach Naval Shipyard, one of the city’ biggest employers.
The Save Our Shipyard Committee would not be an official city commission but would be co-sponsored by the city and the Chamber of Commerce, with members drawn from the city, the shipyard, the Navy and the business community.
Local officials are concerned that the naval yard is losing major rebuilding jobs to private yards.
Members of Downtown Long Beach Associates, representing downtown businesses, told the council this week that efforts must be made to assure continued work for the more than 5,000 people employed at the shipyard.
The committee would keep an eye on employment levels at the shipyard and lobby federal officials to steer major contracts to Long Beach.
