5 More Unions Join Paris Transit Strike
PARIS — A strike by transport workers that has seriously hit commuter services in the French capital all week spread Friday as five more unions joined the movement to press for higher pay.
The Parisian transport authority said all bus depots in the city were affected by the strike, with only 45% of buses running.
In the suburbs, 360 army trucks and some 500 private buses transported commuters stranded by a strike of maintenance workers on the RER suburban railway. Apart from minimum service on one small stretch, the major two lines of the RER were at a standstill. The subway system was running almost normally.
The striking unions are demanding an extra $88 to $166 a month for their members, a demand France’s government has rejected.
