Sweden salvaged one victory in its Davis Cup final against champion West Germany when Stefan Edberg defeated Carl-Uwe Steeb, 6-4, 8-6, at Goteborg, Sweden.
Because West Germany had clinched the title by winning the first three matches, the closing two singles matches were shortened to best-of-three sets.
After the Edberg-Steeb match, the Swedes defaulted the final singles match against Patrick Kuhnen, making the final score 4-1 for West Germany.
