A Lakewood motorist, apparently distracted as he sped north on the Orange Freeway in Brea, rammed into a tanker truck Monday morning, the California Highway Patrol reported.
Alease Wollery, 22, of Lakewood, a passenger in the front seat of the car, died as she was being taken by helicopter to UC Irvine Medical Center in Orange, the CHP said.
The driver of the car was David Fischer, 23, who was taken to the medical center with a broken leg, the CHP said. A medical center spokeswoman said he is fully alert and in stable condition.
The CHP estimated that Fischer was driving more than 80 m.p.h. when he crashed.
Fischer told officers that he was looking at a motorcycle hooked to the back of another vehicle when his car drifted off to the right, striking the tanker truck, police said.
The 7:05 a.m. accident, just north of Lambert Road, closed the freeway for a short time.
