Local News in Brief : Irvine : Irvine Unified Plans a Fourth High School

The Irvine Unified School District, anticipating continued growth in the city, is considering four locations for a new high school, officials said Thursday.
By mid-1990, the city will need a high school to serve an additional 2,000 students said Corinne Riave, facilities planning coordinator for the school district. The new school would bring the total of high schools in the city to four.
“We are working to identify a site in the north Irvine area,” Riave said. The city anticipates growth in the northern section of the city based on annual demographic studies, she said.
The potential locations for the school are at the southwest corner of Irvine Boulevard and Culver Drive, an undeveloped area in the northern foothills, an agricultural preserve near Jeffrey Road and an area within a proposed Northwood residential development, Riave said. Each site is 40 acres, she said.
There are currently about 20,000 students in the Irvine school system, Riave said. At this point, she said, the year that the school opens depends on the availability of state funding and the rate of growth in the northern area.
