WASHINGTON — Secretary of State-designate James A. Baker III will accompany President-elect Bush to the funeral of Japanese Emperor Hirohito on Feb. 24, a Baker aide said today. By that time, Bush will be President and Baker may also have been confirmed as secretary.
The Senate Foreign Relations Committee is scheduled to hold hearings on Baker’s nomination next week and there has been talk of having the Senate vote on the appointment soon after. The journey to Tokyo is the first foreign trip scheduled for both officials in their new posts.
