The Deukmejian Administration urged the U.S. Interior Department to exclude from a proposed Central California offshore oil and gas lease sale environmentally sensitive tracts located between Sonoma County to the northern edge of Monterey Bay. The Interior Department is soliciting review and comments from the state and other interested parties before proceeding with Lease Sale 119, which is scheduled to take place in 1991. State Environmental Affairs Secretary Joanne Sharpless urged that Interior delete from the sale a 6- to 12-mile wide strip from the southern tip of San Francisco Bay to the northern edge of Monterey Bay, including a sea otter range and the nation’s only breeding ground for elephant seals off Point Ano Nuevo.
