San Francisco Public Defender Jeff Brown withdrew his endorsement of Harvey Zall, Gov. George Deukmejian’s controversial nominee to head the state public defender’s office. Brown testified on Zall’s behalf in a Senate Rules Committee confirmation hearing last month. He said he changed his position after conferring with other defense attorneys who have worked with Zall and oppose his confirmation. “I think I made a mistake and, frankly, I think the governor made a mistake, and it should be rectified,” Brown said. Zall will appear before the Rules Committee on Wednesday for a second hearing on his confirmation.
