Bomb Blast at British Consulate in Karachi Kills Pakistani Guard
KARACHI, Pakistan — A bomb exploded at a guardhouse outside the British Consulate in Karachi on Sunday night, killing a Pakistani guard, police said.
Eyewitnesses said the blast occurred around 9:35 p.m., when the mission in the port city was closed.
There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the explosion, but Muslims here have been protesting British writer Salman Rushdie’s novel, “The Satanic Verses.”
At least 19 people have been killed in India and Pakistan since Feb. 14, when Iran’s supreme leader, the Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, declared that Rushdie should be put to death for blaspheming against Islam in his book.
