GTE Unit Cuts Jobs: GTE Southwest in Dallas, a subsidiary of GTE, said it trimmed 600 positions because of a regulatory decision slicing local phone rates by $59 million a year. GTE said 100 independent contractors would be released and an additional 400 existing vacancies will remain unfilled “indefinitely.” Attrition or layoffs would account for the remaining positions. The unit employs about 9,900.
