Clashes Mark Slayings in 1976; Israel Troops Kill 3 Palestinians

SHWEIKEH, Occupied West Bank — Israeli troops shot to death three Palestinians and at least 33 were reported wounded in the occupied West Bank and Gaza Strip today as Arabs on both sides of Israel’s pre-1967 borders marked Land Day.
Land Day commemorates the 1976 killing of six Arabs by security forces during protests against expropriation of Arab land in Israel.
Palestinians reported clashes with soldiers in more than a dozen locations, following a call by underground leaders to escalate a 15-month-old uprising.
Inside Israel, 700,000 Arab citizens marked Land Day peacefully with a general strike and protest rallies notable for the strong presence of Muslim fundamentalists.
The widespread violence in the occupied territories flared despite massive troop deployments and the closure of most of the areas.
