College Baseball Roundup : Long Beach Hands UCI Another Big West Loss
UC Irvine left 10 runners stranded and lost, 10-2, to 15th-ranked Cal State Long Beach (34-8, 6-2) in a Big West Conference game Saturday at Long Beach’s Blair Field.
Long Beach center fielder Darrell Sherman went four for five, including a three-run triple in the fourth to give Long Beach a 5-0 lead.
Sherman scored three runs in the game.
Chris Gill, the 49ers’ second baseman, went three for four, all singles, and scored three runs. Starter Kyle Abbott (10-2) pitched five innings, striking out seven and walking three for his 10th victory.
Greg Hays pitched the final four innings to pick up his 12th save.
UC Irvine scored in the sixth inning on a two-run single by catcher Jon Burger. Al Rodriguez, Freddie Combs and Mike Goodcase each had two hits for the Anteaters (14-23-1, 1-7).
In another conference game:
Nevada Las Vegas 16, Cal State Fullerton 6--Nevada Las Vegas had 13 hits and Cal State Fullerton 11, but the Titans (25-15, 5-3) committed seven errors to make the difference at Roger Barnson Field in Las Vegas.
Titan first baseman Dave Staton got his 14th home run of the season, a solo shot in the second inning. He went two for four with one run scored.
Kevin Lofthus, a designated hitter for Las Vegas (28-11, 4-4), extended his hitting streak to 33 games, five shy of the Big West Conference record set last season by Cal State Fullerton’s Brent Mayne.
Lofthus went two for five with a single, a double and two runs scored. Vegas right fielder Shaun Murphy was the game’s top hitter, going four for five with a two-run homer and three singles.
