NATION : Cocaine Found on Jet; Eastern Fined
MIAMI — The U.S. Customs Service has impounded an Eastern Airlines passenger jet and slapped the carrier with a $1.2-million fine after finding 75 pounds of cocaine aboard the aircraft, officials said today.
The cocaine was found in a courier bag that was not listed on the cargo manifest for the Boeing 727, which arrived Saturday at Miami International Airport from Paraguay, Customs spokesman Joe Krokos said.
“The aircraft was seized because of Eastern’s failure to exercise care and diligence in preventing illegal drugs from entering on their aircraft,” he said.
