A municipal theater in Florence, Italy, was forced to cancel a one-night performance by the Leningrad Philharmonic after airport customs officials refused to give the musicians their instruments. Theater sources said customs agents at Milan’s Linate Airport had argued that documents were not in order and wanted a large cash deposit, but the theater could not raise the money because banks were closed. The orchestra was in Florence after performances in France and Switzerland as part of a European tour.
