Cal Poly Beats Slippery Rock, 6-1, Stays Alive
Cal Poly San Luis Obispo remained in contention at the NCAA Division II College World Series Wednesday by beating Slippery Rock (Pa.), 6-1, at Montgomery, Ala.
Keith Chura (8-6) allowed seven hits and an unearned run for Cal Poly, which has not given up an earned run in 18 innings.
Cal Poly (36-25) broke a 1-1 tie with five runs in the sixth inning. Ron Crowe doubled to drive in Rich Shepperd and Pat Kirby, and scored on a single by Billy Smith. A wild pitch and a balk brought home the last two runs.
Slippery Rock (42-16), which lost for the first time in the double elimination tournament, took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on a single by Gary Gubbings that scored Bob Maschmeyer, who was safe on an error.
The Mustangs tied it in the third when Bill Daly scored on a single by Todd Rice.
