Fair Hearing for Artist

I was chagrined and amazed that a Memorial Day weekend barbecue held for “a few close friends” is front-page news in the Calendar section of The Times (“Escondido’s Budding Public Art Program Is Pretty Plucky Itself,” June 3).
This event billed as an unveiling of a sculpture model proposed for the city of Escondido, was represented as a victory celebration in Hilliard Harper’s article. That description of the event is an outright fabrication provided by unknown third parties. Prior to the barbecue, Hilliard and I discussed this rumor and the fact that it was inaccurate.
The publication of this rumor as if it was a factual account of the proceedings is prejudicial. To do so before the jurying of this competition is unfortunate. This has been the best-run public arts competition I have observed in the last 10 years here as a working public artist in San Diego. To have the efforts of Escondido, the Arts Review Committee and the three fine artists selected go up in smoke over rumors is unnecessary. I do not wish an apology, but simply a fair hearing in the Fourth Estate.

Editor’s Note: Cole’s denial that the party was a victory celebration was inadvertently deleted from the article.
